Brownfields Basics Workshops

Please join us at one of the above locations for a free introduction to the basics of brownfields!

Whether you are a seasoned veteran of brownfields or new to the concept, you are invited to acquire the knowledge and contacts to help you navigate through the process of bringing these properties back to productive use in your community.

A brownfield is a real property whose use or reuse may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. Many former industrial and commercial sites may indeed be brownfields. Pennsylvania’s voluntary cleanup program, known as Act 2, presents a clear path for addressing brownfields in the Commonwealth.

In these sessions you will hear from experts in the field from the US Environmental Protection Agency, PA Department of Environmental Protection, PA Department of Community and Economic Development, West Virginia University’s Technical Assistance to Brownfield Communities Program (WVU TAB), as well as a local partner to bring you some real-world examples of projects that have gone through the process. Learn to understand the procedures of the Act 2 Program and how to acquire funding for your projects.

The Pennsylvania Brownfields Conference is back!!

March 25-27, 2024
Penn Stater Hotel and Conference Center
State College, PA

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection's Land Recycling Program is pleased to partner once again with the Engineers' Society of Western Pennsylvania in presenting the 2024 Pennsylvania Brownfields Conference.

Call for Presentations for the 2024 Pennsylvania Brownfields Conference!

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), in partnership with the Engineers’ Society of Western Pennsylvania (ESWP), has opened the call for presentations for the 2024 Pennsylvania Brownfields Conference! We seek presentations with current, relevant, and informative content on a wide range of topics involved in bringing a brownfield back to successful reuse.

While fundamental issues such as financing, funding, remediation and others will always provide the foundation for reuse, we hope to go beyond these traditional topics to present a program that is thought-provoking and forward thinking with “what’s next” for the brownfields industry.

Please consider submitting a brief abstract with these thoughts in mind and tell us which one of the themes your presentation falls within. Abstracts are due no later than September 27, 2023. Invited presenters will be notified in early October.
