Landfill Methane Outreach Program (LMOP)

Recovering methane gas at solid waste landfills reduces greenhouse gas emissions while capturing the methane's energy value. The methane captured from landfills can be transformed into a cost-effective fuel source for generating electricity and heat, firing boilers, or even powering vehicles.

Benefits of LFG Recovery
  • Reduces emissions of methane, which is a potent greenhouse gas.
  • Reduces the need to use non-renewable resources such as coal, oil, or natural gas
  • Offsets emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and pollutants such as sulfur dioxide (which is a major contributor to acid rain), particulate matter (a respiratory health concern), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and trace hazardous air pollutants.
General Permits
  • WMGM028 (PDF) - Processing of landfill gas (LFG) generated by the decomposition of municipal waste and residual waste, for beneficial use as an alternative fuel for the electric generators to produce electricity that will be used: (1) for the landfill's daily needs, (2) transmitted to the local electric utility grid, and/or (3) distributed for direct consumer use.
