PA IN THE BALANCE
On March 1-3, 2016, Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences, along with other partners, hosted the Pennsylvania in the Balance Conference in Hershey, Pennsylvania. The event provided a collaborative forum for motivated leaders in agriculture and the environment to identify new and innovative solutions that can help to maintain vibrant and productive agriculture while also meeting the water quality foals for Pennsylvania’s rivers and streams, and the Chesapeake Bay. By the end of the conference, clear themes and priorities had emerged. These ideas, if executed, can form the basis of a new consensus-based, collaborative strategy to help ensure profitable and productive agriculture while also achieving water quality goals. This strategy embraces agriculture’s ingrained culture of stewardship, and looks to the agricultural community to be a leader in working towards our clean water goals.
Four initiatives emerged from the conference, each representing items which attendees and stakeholders agreed were priorities for action. These initiatives are:
