Regulated substances come in three types:
- Hazardous substances defined in the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA). The CERCLA list consists of individual compounds and large groups of compounds. If a chemical is a member of one of the groups, it is regulated in the same manner as one of the individually listed compounds.
- Liquid petroleum products.
- Other substances the department added by regulation including: biodiesel, synthetic fuels and oils, tung oils, wood-derivative oils, inedible seed oils from plants and pure ethanol intended for blending with motor fuels.
